The present administrative structure of the country comprises 24 regions (oblasts): Volynska, Lvivska, Zakarpatska, Ivano-Frankivska, Ternopilska, Chernivetska, Khmelnytska, Rivnenska, Zhytomyrska, Vinnytska, Kyivska, Cherkaska, Kirovohradska, Mykolaivska, Odeska, Chernigivska, Sumska, Poltavska, Kharkivska, Dnipropetrovska, Donetska, Zaporizka, Khersonska and Luganska; two municipalities with oblast status (Kiev and Sevastopol) and one autonomous republic (Crimea).
The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv with a population of 2.6 million people. Located on the Dnipro River, Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, founded c.600 A.D. by Prince Kyi. Other major cities include Kharkiv (1.6 million), the industrial capital of northeastern Ukraine; Dnipropetrovsk (1.2 million), an industrial and electric power center on the lower Dnipro; Donetsk (1.1 million), an industrial and coal center in southeastern Ukraine; Odessa (1.1 million), the major port on the Black Sea; and Lviv (800,000) the most important urban center in Western Ukraine.
